The South Saskatchewan River provides water for over 50% of Alberta and Saskatchewan’s population, supporting drinking water, agriculture, and industry.
However, glacier, snowmelt from the Rocky Mountains, and foothills contributes nearly 90% of the river’s annual flow. Studies show that these glaciers have lost over 40% of their ice mass in the last century, significantly reducing water availability.
Without urgent action, experts estimate that many of these glaciers could disappear by 2100, threatening water security in Western Canada. (South Saskatchewan River - Wikipedia)
